Cara McGuinness, CNM WHNP-BC is a nurse-midwife in a dual clinical-teaching role with Penn Nursing and Penn Medicine. Prior to her time at Penn Nursing, she served as a nurse-midwife and assistant professor at Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine. At Boston Medical Center, she launched the Curbside Care Program, a postpartum/newborn mobile clinic that brought holistic, interdisciplinary peripartum care directly to families, breaking down healthcare access barriers. Throughout her career, Cara has been deeply invested in addressing the underlying structural issues causing healthcare inequities. She is a pivotal member of the Structural Competency Working Group, fostering the integration of structural competency teachings into nursing and medical residency programs nationwide. Prior to her clinical training, Caraās background in global anthropology research led her to examine dual birth care systems in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, and investigate biocultural aspects of menopause in Formosa, Argentina. A proud alumna, Cara earned both her BSN and BA from the University of Pennsylvania. She is excited to return to Penn Nursing to help expand access to midwifery education.
