Dr. Karen Carlson is a Licensed Acupuncturist in New Hampshire and graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York City in 2012 with a Master’s of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine and earned her Doctorate degree in Acupuncture and Chinese medicine in 2019 from PCOM San Diego.
While completing her clinical training in NYC, she worked at the Initiative for Women with Disabilities; Hospital for Joint Diseases at NYU Langone Medical Center, Housing Works; Advocacy group for people living with HIV/AIDS and homelessness, and St. Vincent’s Cancer Center. Ā She also completedĀ anĀ Integrative OncologyĀ certificate for Acupuncture for the Cancer Patient from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Ā In her private clinic she’s had the opportunity to treat patients with a variety of health concernsĀ including arthritis, anxiety, insomnia, eating disorders, PMS, infertility, IBS, allergies, asthma, repetitive stress injuries, post-stroke recovery, diabetic neuropathy, cancer and several other conditions.
For several years she treated patients in her thriving private practice in Union Square in New York, as well as several community acupuncture clinics in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
In 2016 Karen took a break from practicing to start a family and gave birth to a baby girl. While mothering at home, she began her Doctorate degree studies focusing on Postpartum healing and recovery with Chinese medicine. For postpartum support click here. In 2018 her family moved to Switzerland, where she gave birth to her second child. While completing the DACM degree work, she completed the clinical component there, following postpartum midwives on hospital rounds, and home visits. Postpartum care in Switzerland is part of the mainstream medicine standard of care there, and includes up to 20 visits from a midwife at home after giving birth. This is an important area of interest for Karen as it has been a sorely overlooked area of womenās health in the US. She continues to study postpartum recovery, maternal-fetal medicine and womenās health with Classical Chinese herbal medicine in the Fire Spirit School tradition with a teacher on the West Coast.
Karen has been a practitioner of Yoga for 14Ā years and in addition to being a Licensed Acupuncturist, she also has a certificate in Classical and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy.Ā She studied Chinese and Japanese systems of Martial Arts for many years and continues to study Qi Gong and Tui Na with an internationally renowned Martial Arts Master.Ā In addition to the healing and movement arts, she is a classically trained visual artist.Ā Her degree in Sculpture offered intensive studying of the human figure and structural anatomy.Ā Ā Karen usesĀ acupuncture, tui na, and any other appropriate tools offered by Chinese Medicine to address the needs of an individual. Ā SheĀ is fascinated with body alignment and enjoys working with musclulo-skeletal injuries and postural discrepancies, and alsoĀ focuses onĀ anxiety and anxiety related conditions including sleepĀ difficultyĀ and digestive complaints, Women’s health and fertility, and cancer support.
Karen sees patients both in her private practice in her pastoral home office in Loudon and at Pure Indulgence Day Spa in Concord.
She is the proud mother of 2 beautiful children who she also schools at home.
